In 1988 eight people with an interest in preserving aviation history began the process to form The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron. On November 17, 1990, the newest unit of the national Commemorative Air Force was officially sanctioned . From these small beginnings grew a vibrant organization more than 75 members strong.
The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron's current project is a complete, historically accurate rebuild of a Fairchild PT-19 trainer. The PT-19 was used as a primary trainer (PT) in WWII. The PT-19 literally began as a bunch of parts and every step of the way has been an adventure. As a tribute to the many man hours working on innumerable bits and pieces, as well as the research that went into the restoration of our PT-19, we have named her “Some Assembly Required”.
The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron works on the past with an eye to the future. We are nearing the completion of our PT-19 and looking forward to new challenges. We are currently working on acquiring additional aircraft and for the eventual construction of a museum complex to house the squadron.
We are proud of our state of the art facility and are fortunate to be housed at the Tulsa Technology Center in Jenks Oklahoma. In addition to the large hangar space at TTCC, we also have a dedicated office, a tool and equipment room, as well as a classroom, where meetings and ground school take place.
The spirit of camaraderie is strong in our squadron. We currently gather for monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at Tulsa Technology Riverside Campus room A114 at 7pm. We work Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Saturday mornings our squadron schedules time to work on our projects. We never work on an empty stomach, and traditionally meet at 7am for breakfast at 'First Watch' restaurant at 82nd and Lewis in Tulsa. At 8am, we caravan to the hangar and divide up for our various assignments for the day and work until noon.
We are especially happy to have people of all ages in our squadron, from 13 year olds to eighty-somethings, there is a place for everyone in The Spirit of Tulsa Squadron!
Please remember that you do not have to be a pilot or mechanic to join us. We need people of all professions, from clerical to engineers; from computer literate folks to salesmen. The only thing you have to have is an interest in helping to preserve a bit of aviation history, and a desire to have fun while doing so.
